He wrote: “West of the Pleiades is a crimson streak that spans 2.5 degrees of sky. NGC 1499 is the designation for an emission nebula that emits largely in a set of narrow hydrogen bands. Named for its distinct form, that is the California Nebula.” Thanks, Jeremy! See extra of December’s deep sky under.

View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Kurtis Markham in Alexandria, Virginia, captured the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) in Auriga on December 19, 2022. His work was made below light-polluted skies, rated at class 8 or 9 within the Bortle dark-sky scale. He wrote: “The flaming star’s origin is supposedly from the close by star nursery of the Orion Nebula.” Thanks, Kurtis!

View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Jelieta Walinski in Hickiwan, Arizona, accomplished this telescopic view of the reflection nebula Messier 78 in Orion on December 21, 2022. This spectacular picture is the results of 48 hours of integration. She wrote: “That is M78, aka NGC 2068. It’s a reflection nebula within the constellation of Orion.” Thanks, Jelieta!
Large swirls of orange nebulosity over a background of distant stars.
View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Karl Diefenderfer in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, captured this telescopic view of NGC 2264 in Monoceros. NGC 2264 is a deep-sky object comprising 2 astronomical our bodies (the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster) on December 24, 2022. He wrote: “Merry Christmas from 2,300 light-years away within the constellation Monoceros.” Thanks, Karl!

A star cluster

Large area of blue nebulosity with bright stars immersed within.
View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Karrar Mohammed in Alkut, Iraq, captured this telescopic view of the Pleiades star cluster on December 17, 2022. He wrote: “The Pleiades, also called the 7 Sisters, Messier 45 and different names by completely different cultures, is an asterism. It’s an open star cluster containing middle-aged, sizzling B-type stars within the northwest of the constellation Taurus. At a distance of about 444 light-years, it’s among the many nearest star clusters to Earth. It’s the nearest Messier object to Earth. And it’s the obvious cluster to the unaided eye within the evening sky.” Thanks, Karrar!

A supernova remnant

Swirls of orange and green nebulosity over a background of distant stars.
View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Jeremy Likness in Monroe, Washington, captured the Crab Nebula (Messier 1) in Taurus on December 15, 2022. He wrote: “Within the late 1600s, comet hunter Charles Messier mistakenly noticed a smudge he thought was a comet however realized it wasn’t transferring. Irritated, he began a catalog of issues to keep away from, and entry M1 was the Crab Nebula. This time of 12 months, it stays excessive within the sky all evening within the Pacific Northwest, so I took benefit of two clear nights to seize simply over 5 hours of information. You’re looking on the remnants of a stellar explosion or supernova that occurred lower than 10,000 years in the past. The sunshine took 6,500 years to achieve my telescope.” Thanks, Jeremy!
