The barred spiral galaxy UGC 678 takes heart stage on this picture from the NASA/ESA Hubble Area Telescope. The spectacular galaxy lies round 260 million light-years from Earth within the constellation Pisces and is sort of face on, permitting its lazily winding spiral arms to stretch throughout this picture. Within the foreground, a smaller edge-on galaxy appears to bisect the higher portion of UGC 678.
Barred spiral galaxies have a bar-shaped construction of stars that extends from reverse sides of the galaxy’s central bulge. Bars kind in spiral galaxies when the orbits of stars close to the galaxy’s coronary heart turn out to be unstable and stretched out. As their orbits lengthen, they create a bar.
The bar grows as their gravity captures increasingly more nearby stars. UGC 678’s bar is faint. It’s seen as a diagonal group of stars that stretches from the decrease left (7 o’clock) to the higher proper (1 o’clock) of the galaxy’s core.
