A barred spiral galaxy and a lenticular galaxy come collectively to create this interacting pair often called Arp 140. The lenticular galaxy, NGC 274, is seen on the best facet of this new NASA Hubble Area Telescope picture, and the barred spiral, NGC 275, is at left. The twosome is situated within the constellation Cetus.
Lenticular galaxies and barred spiral galaxies have totally different constructions. In barred spiral galaxies, a bar of stars runs by means of the central bulge of the galaxy (seen right here as a bright-white, vertical haze in NGC 275). Usually, the arms of the galaxy begin on the finish of the bar.
Lenticular galaxies, however, are categorised someplace between elliptical and spiral galaxies. They get their identify from the edge-on look that resembles a disk. Lenticular galaxies have giant central bulges and flattened disk-like spirals, however no spiral arms. They do not have a lot gasoline and dust and are made up primarily of previous stars.
