Rob Lyons, from Vancouver, British Columbia

The imager tells how he bought this spectacular shot:

I’ve tried to take this {photograph} for 3 years throughout my annual journeys to Tofino, British Columbia. The primary yr, I couldn’t discover any starfish in any respect. Within the second yr, I discovered some and made a picture, however the starfish had been so small that you’d want a telescope to see them. This previous yr, after per week of looking, I discovered just a few on my final evening of the journey. These starfish had been connected to a rock that’s at a well-liked browsing spot, so the waves are very energetic. To get the foreground, I shot at blue hour and used my Sony A7R digicam with a 20mm f/1.8 lens to rise up near the starfish. The tide was coming in quick, and the starfish was already half submerged, so I labored quick to get the shot. I then arrange my star tracker on the security of the rocky cliffs close by, shot 15 photos of the Milky Way [with a Kolari Vision UV/IR-cut and Hα-pass filter], and stacked them collectively. The 2 photographs had been then mixed.
