A brand new paper printed in Nature Astronomy is shedding mild on magnetars, whose attributes stay poorly understood. A magnetar is a sort of neutron star with a particularly sturdy magnetic discipline that rotates as soon as each two to 10 seconds.
Researchers observing the magnetar SGR 1935+2154 detected a sudden slowing of the star’s angular momentum, also known as a spin-down glitch, on October 5, 2020.
Within the following days, the magnetar emitted three Quick Radio Burst-like radio bursts adopted by a month-long episode of pulsed radio emission, regardless of there being no indicators of variation within the X-ray emission conduct within the star or proof of a robust X-ray burst.
As a result of rarity of spin-down glitches and radio signals from magnetars, the analysis workforce says the synchronicity of those occasions suggests an affiliation, providing clues to their origin and triggering mechanisms.
The researchers level to plasma shedding near the magnetic pole, which generated a wind that impacted the star’s momentum and magnetic field and created the mix wanted to set off radio emission.
The paper is titled “Magnetar spin-down glitch clearing the way in which for FRB-like bursts and a pulsed radio episode.”
