 Black holes are large warps in space and time whose pitch-black nature retains them mysterious. But scientists proceed to push their understanding of the objects in deep space.

Over the previous 12 months, astronomers have gleaned new insights into black holes throughout the universe. Here’s a checklist of 15 occasions black holes shocked us in 2022. 

1. Sagittarius A*: 1st picture of Milky Way’s black hole

In 2022, scientists captured the first photo of Sagittarius A*, the gargantuan black hole on the coronary heart of the Milky Way. The Event Horizon Telescope captured the picture within the gentle of submillimeter radio waves emitted by scorching gasoline swirling across the fringe of the black hole.
