Chinese surveillance balloon in US airspace causes international stir

China has confirmed {that a} huge high-altitude balloon seen over Montana this week was an uncrewed Chinese language airship.

The balloon was noticed close to Billings, Montana, on Wednesday (Feb. 1) because it appeared to be hovering stationary (opens in new tab), excessive within the sky. On Thursday (Feb. 2), U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Protection Command (NORAD) confirmed that they’d detected and are monitoring a “high-altitude surveillance balloon (opens in new tab)” over the continental United States. NORAD acknowledged the balloon poses no bodily or army risk to anybody on the bottom, in keeping with Cmdr. Gen. Glen VanHerck.
