India launched its first space mission to review the sun on Saturday, lower than two weeks after a profitable uncrewed landing near the south polar region of the moon.

The Aditya-L1 spacecraft took off on board a satellite launch automobile from the Sriharikota space heart in southern India on a quest to review the sun from some extent about 1.5 million kilometers (930,000 miles) from earth, referred to as L-1.

The spacecraft is supplied with seven payloads to review the sun’s corona, chromosphere, photosphere and solar wind, the Indian House Analysis Group stated.

After over an hour, the ISRO stated the launch was “completed efficiently.”

“The automobile has positioned the satellite exactly into its meant orbit. India’s first solar observatory has begun its journey to the vacation spot of Solar-Earth L1 level,” ISRO posted on the X platform, previously referred to as Twitter.

The satellite is scheduled to take 125 days to achieve the L1 level.

India grew to become the first country to land a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole on Aug. 23—a historic voyage to uncharted territory that scientists imagine may maintain important reserves of frozen water. After a failed try and land on the moon in 2019, India joined the US, the Soviet Union and China as solely the fourth nation to realize this milestone.

Jitendra Singh, India’s junior minister for science and expertise, praised the ISRO officers for his or her work on the launch.

“Congratulations India. Congratulations ISRO,” he stated whereas being current on the ISRO management room. “It is a sunshine second for India.”

The sun examine, mixed with India’s profitable moon touchdown, would utterly change the picture of the ISRO on this planet neighborhood, stated Manish Purohit, a former scientist on the analysis group.

The Aditya-L1 was headed for the L1 level of the Earth-Solar system, which affords an uninterrupted view of the sun, ISRO stated. “This can present a larger benefit of observing solar actions and their impact on space climate in real-time.”

As soon as in place, the satellite would supply dependable forewarning of an onslaught of particles and radiation from heightened solar exercise that has the potential to knock out energy grids on Earth, stated B.R. Guruprasad, a space scientist, in an article in The Occasions of India newspaper. The superior warning can defend the satellites which can be the spine of the worldwide financial construction in addition to the individuals residing in space stations.

“These seven payloads are going to review the sun as a star in all of the doable spectrum positions that we’ve seen, ultraviolet, and X-ray. … It is like we’ll get a black and white picture, the colour picture and the high-definition picture, 4K picture of the sun, in order that we do not miss out on something that’s occurring on the sun,” Purohit stated.
