CRS-29: SpaceX resupply mission to the ISS

SpaceX efficiently launched its twenty ninth cargo mission to the Worldwide House Station (ISS) on Thursday, November 9, 2023. The CRS-29 mission lifted off atop a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy House Middle in Florida at 8:28 p.m. EST on November 9 (1:28 UTC on November 10). Dragon is to ship over 6,500 kilos (3,000 kg) of provides and scientific {hardware} to the ISS, together with seasonal treats like chocolate, pumpkin spice espresso, and cranberry sauce.

NASA astronauts and Expedition 70 Flight Engineers Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara will monitor the CRS-29 Dragon capsule’s docking with the ISS on Saturday, November 11. NASA TV will start its docking protection at 3:45 a.m. EST (8:45 UTC) on Saturday. The docking itself is scheduled to happen at 5:21 a.m. EST (10:21 UTC).

AWE and ILLUMA-T

Among the many cargo are two distinguished experiments, AWE (Atmospheric Waves Experiment) and ILLUMA-T (Built-in Laser Communications Relay Demonstration Low Earth Orbit Consumer Modem and Amplifier Terminal). Each are funded by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation Program.

The AWE experiment seeks to find out the forces driving space climate, difficult the earlier perception that solely the sun’s solar wind influences the higher ambiance. Particularly, it can assist scientists research airglow patterns. Airglow refers back to the faint, predominantly greenish or reddish glow of the Earth’s higher ambiance, significantly within the evening sky.

ILLUMA-T, then again, is poised to revolutionize space communications. The experiment will check high-speed laser communications, working in tandem with NASA’s Laser Communications Relay Demonstration mission. By creating NASA’s first two-way laser communications relay system, ILLUMA-T opens the door to bettering how we ship knowledge in space, including to the prevailing radio techniques and making ready scientists for extra superior exploration in outer space.

After CRS-29, extra spaceflight to return

After Thursday evening’s launch, the Falcon 9’s first stage landed again on Earth at Cape Canaveral House Pressure Station’s Landing Zone 1. The November 10 launch marked the ninth flight on the Business Resupply Providers-2 SpaceX contract and the second flight of this Dragon spacecraft, which beforehand flew on NASA’s SpaceX twenty sixth resupply companies mission. Beforehand, this Dragon supported the Crew-7 mission.

The ISS is celebrating its twenty fifth anniversary this month. With 273 individuals from 21 countries having visited the ISS, the orbiting laboratory continues to represent world collaboration: not a foul message for these attempting instances.

A space jellyfish, or exhaust plume, caught by our photographer – Greg Diesel Walck – following the CRS-29 Dragon launch on November 10, 2023. These atmospheric jellyfish turn out to be seen following MECO (foremost engine cutoff) solely below sure circumstances. It occurs when the observer on the bottom is in darkness (throughout a night or predawn launch), when the sun has set on the observer’s a part of Earth … however nonetheless illuminates the plume excessive above Earth. Thanks, Greg!
