Virgin Orbit’s Cosmic Lady service airplane has arrived in Cornwall in preparation for the first-ever orbital launch from the UK.
Cosmic Girl, a modified Boeing 747 service plane, landed at Newquay Airport in Cornwall on Oct. 11. Virgin Orbit is focusing on a November takeoff from Spaceport Cornwall to launch the pioneering “Begin Me Up” mission.
Cosmic Lady will carry a LauncherOne rocket with it underneath its wing earlier than releasing it within the higher ambiance. The 2-stage rocket will then do the remainder of the work to ship eight small satellites into orbit for a spread of presidency and business clients.

The mission is about to be the primary orbital launch from the UK and the primary business launch from Western Europe.
The Begin Me Up mission is a joint venture between the U.S. and U.Okay. governments, launched by Virgin Orbit, the UK House Company (UKSA), UK House Command and Spaceport Cornwall.
“It is a large second for us all in Cornwall because the journey to U.Okay. space launch has formally begun,” Melissa Thorpe, Head of Spaceport Cornwall, stated in a statement (opens in new tab).
It’s going to even be the primary worldwide launch for Virgin Orbit, which has to date launched 5 missions since 2020.
The entire earlier missions have lifted off from Mojave Air and House Port in California. The most recent mission came about in July, sending seven small satellites into orbit and marking Virgin Orbit’s fourth consecutive profitable launch.
The Begin Me Up mission, named as a tribute to iconic British band the Rolling Stones, is seen as simply the beginning for U.Okay. launches.
